i just changed my oil...put the 6 qts in like i always have...now after the truck runs for about 30 seconds theres a constent tapping like sound.....i can't tell where its comming from.oil pressure is where its always been.......i'm at a loss here and duno where to begin
Sounds like it may a lifter noise or someother valve-train type noise. Mine makes a little tapping noise almost all of the time, especially when the motor is good and hot. What weight oil are you using? I use 10w30 all year round. Hope this helps a bit.

I use 10-30 in the winter and 20-50 in the summer.......is there an additive i can put in the oil to quiet down or stop the tapping?
I wouldn't use any oil additives because they may hurt the additives that are already in your oil. The noise may depend on how much it annoys you. If you think it is serious, take to get looked at by a professional, and if not, just try to cope with it. All of the 300s are known for some kinds of different noises.
What filter are you using? If it's an orange fram, that could be part of the problem..They have lousy anti drainback valves. Kinda sounds like a sticking lifter...It's possible your old oil was thin and diluted, and the new fresh oil is thicker when cold. That can cause a lifter problem, if the lifter is prone to sticking. Does it go away when warm? It probably would in most cases with a sticking lifter.
The oil thins when warm, and flows better. If it never quits, it's either a really bad lifter, or the valve needs adjustment, or maybe even some new parts. IE: a gauled out rocker can cause you to lose oil flow from the pushrod to the rocker, and cause a bad tap.
I'm having trouble with a sticking lifter on my 74...I had been running some ATF, and a lil marvel oil for a while, and it had quit.
I thought it was fixed...The truck hasn't been driven enough in quite a while...But when I changed the oil, it started back up again. I'm fairly sure because of the thicker viscosity of the fresh oil when cold. I'm using 10-40 right now...I've been thinking of dumping it and going to 5 -30 for a while, but I should just change all the lifters and be done with it... I am running a quart of rislone with the new oil, after it started back up. But the rislone is slow as I haven't been driving it a lot, and so far, is still sticking when cold... MK
i use the from toughguard filter....TG8A...i noticed today it isn't making the sound anymore. any kind of noise the engine makes that i don't think is normal drives me crazy till i get it fixed or it stops.
