Possible timing chain problems
I got a 92 Explorer 4x4 and when ever I try to maintain a speed, I get a nasty vibration from the floor board and I get some back fire from the front under my truck. I cant go faster than 50 mph at times. If I brake and then pick back up accelartion it stalls in gear then it shifts. My rpm's get stuck at 2000 alot of the times, it might just be the meter. It bucks at times, like when I try to gain some spend, its jerks and bucks, like its trying to catch up with it self. I just got a new tranny and I had my cat. converter taken off. The place I talked to about it said its gonna cost about 800 bucks for the labor and parts. I hope it isnt my timing chain.
1. Remove all plugs and run compression test. If chain has slipped a tooth or 2 it will change the geometry of the valve to compression timing sequence and affect the compression on all cylinders. It should show as a fairly uniform abnormal compression pressure. If not then start looking elsewhere.
2. If test 1 looks OK, reinstall plugs and run a test of the timing with a timing light. Although timing is NOT adjustable, look to see if it is within specs. This will test the crank sensor, DIS module and EEC timing and outputs to DIS module along with coil pack.
From your description, sounds more like a fault in the sensors/ignition/EEC chain.
If it is that bad, you should also have a check engine light, stored codes and should fail an EEC self test sequence.
Run a code check first and work on the first code given, then clear and retest till all codes are gone.
