The closest team to me is the Calgary Flames, although when you are a Flames fan, you need a backup team to root for because the flames only make the playoffs once in a blue moon. Mine is Montreal, who used to be my team before the Flames arrived.
As far as missing it... I can see there will be a big void where the playoffs used to be. I hardly watch NHL hockey before the playoffs.
But the lower teams the WHL, the OHL and the college level tems in parts of the states.. they are doing Great. Banner years for the Lethbridge Hurricanes, Medicine Hat Tigers, Red Deer Rebels and the Calgary Hitmen, the teams within my range of vision. So.. its not all a bad thing. My biggest worry is that they might NEVER come back. This might just be the death tome for the NHL.
It is FAR BETTER hockey.
If you really want a treat, go to a collegiate game. These guys play FULL OUT, for the love of the game.
College,University,Local Juniors/Seniors Hockey is Amazing
I'm going through withdrawel like it's crazy. If I could watch some AHL or college it would be a big help. What I'd like to really see is some televised Swedish Eliteserien hockey so I can see MoDo Hockey. Let's all have marches to the closest hockey arenas and protest! GO! GO! BLACK AND GOLD!!!
Fortunately for me, my son plays Pee Wee AA(12 year-olds) hockey. Two games and three practices a week. Started back in September and will go to April.
I miss it dearly. I was fortunate enough to live in Tampa last year when The Lightning won the cup, and have lived near enough to Detroit to go to a bunch of games (on a friend's season tickets). There isn't exactly an abundance of semi-pro teams in the D/FW area to go watch, either.
I don't really miss it too much, but am a Sharks fan, some what. I like tennis; I know, I know, W.C. Fields once said "I have 2 sons. One plays tennis, the other plays a mans sport". But miss hockey? Not really.
I played varsity hockey in highschool, played often since I was 10, and stopped watching NHL stuff after Neely left the bruins. After that there wasn't much for me to watch...the NHL got too watered down....
I miss it pretty bad but I have plenty of college and high school hockey to watch. My buddy also coaches a high school girls team so there is plenty of hockey to go around. The pro arena is currently hosting lacrosse games now so I can check that out as well but yah it bites that there is no NHL.
yeah, i miss not having anything to watch these long winter months, however being from new england, we don't have an NHL team, yes i know the Bruins, but they're not really an NHL team they're just an NHL training and rehab facility, with no commitment to ever trying to win, as their owner is just concerned with selling beer and hotdogs!
