Does anyone know what a economiser (enrichment valve) and an elastomer valve do? My 69 ford will not idle or when it does it will idle high. Also when facing a decline..and it doesn't require much, it will die. When it does this it kind of acts like it's loading up or maybe starving. When replacing the enrichment valve do they have to be identicle? THe one in a rebuild kit I bought has one but it is taller. Does this make a difference? Also the elastomer valve has a pin hole in it and the kit did not give me a replacement for it. Thanks in advance for any help I can get!
The enrichment valve( power valve) is a vacuum operated. It opens when the vacuum drops below a certain point under acceleration. If it is bad, it will stay open and make the carb run rich.
I would start by checking the float level first.
I guess if it is bad it will effect the idle as well?? Once warmed up it will idle (not smoothly) and every now and then it will rev up. What about that little rubber nipple behind the accelorator pump...know anything about that? Also in the rebuild kit the new power valve is taller than the original one...can I use it or will it create problems? As far as I can tell it doesn't touch anything but I'd rather be sure before I pull the carb off the truck again.
The taller one should work. The flapper valve behind the accelerator pump is a one way check valve so that you don't pump fuel back into the bowl when you push the accelerator and all of the fuel goes to the squirter nozzle.
Yes it will make the idle too rich if bad.
Okay. Thanks for that info. When I took this apart I followed the directions to a T. The specs stated that, with slight pressure applied the the float, it should measure 7/16" from the top of the float the the top edge of the bowl. This was done precisely (?spelling?). It also said to adjust the mixture screws...tighten them all the way and back out 1 1/2 turns each. What I'm dealing with is that the idle adjustment screw is screwed in WAY far and the only way it will idle is if I pull the choke out. And then it will idle high and then sometimes quit idling and die...usually it will just idle high. I haven't replaced the flapper valve or the power valve yet but is this something that can be fixed by replacing these other items? I've never touched a carb before because frankly they terrify me...such touchy things. But I don't have the $90 to blow on a remanufactured carb from the local parts store either. THanks again!
