Question First Time PSD owner

Just drove my first PSD home ( approx 200 mls under my belt with a diesel)
Bought a nice 97 250 HD ext. cab 2WD only 79000ml on her looks like it just came out of showroom.
Going to pull ma,s new 5th wheel.
Well anyway the thing is awsome, other than ride it feels like no end to power out on the road almost like power in the old park avenue.
Question I have however since no one explained anything to me at the Ford dealer--How many times does one of these PSD automatics shift ? it feels like it shifts 4 or five times from 0 to around 45 or 50 ??
When it shifts at around 30 0r 40 it takes off like a big bird.
Excuse my inexperience-- but all I ever owned before was the little 302 's , 351
1/2 ton automatics which to me shift like a car.

What say ya?
Thanks
Bob

Welcome aboard, Bob!!
You should feel four "shifts", though only three are actually shifts. Let me explain...
What you'll feel is the shift from 1st to 2nd, from 2nd to 3rd, then the torque convertor will lock, then you'll shift from 3rd into OD. On my truck, the torque convertor locks at 36mph, and OD engages at 42mph, assuming light throttle. I seldom apply light throttle, however.

Thanks Quadzilla for the response, you explained very well just what I was talking about. Sounds like I should not have to be concerned, like I said it was just unexpected having always been a gassy truck man.
Thanks Again.
