For the smallblocks the valve covers will be rectangular with i belive 5 or 6 bolts holding them on. The big blocks should be anywhere from 8-10 bolts holding the VC on.
Also another way to determine your engine size (or what it originally came with) is to look at your Emissions sticker on the core support. This should tell you what it came with from the factory. Also the VIN number will provide this info too.
