Loose steering

My Bronco has a problem that I hear is common. The steering has a lot of play in it. You have to move it right and left constantly to keep it straight often. You get used to it after a while but I'm curious as to how I can fix this?

Hello, yes Ford's do have a very common problem with loose steering especially with floating conditions on the highway. There are several reasons for these occurances. One of the most common is worn front end parts especially tie rods. You need to have a good look at them and check. Another is worn steering box or loose bolts holding steering box to frame. Another is a worn column shaft up near the firewall. You can install an old feeler gauge strip in there to correct that one!
Alignment is the last place to check after all else has been checked and fixed.
Let us know how you make out!

I wouldn't know a steering box from a hole in the ground. Heh. I'm not too smart with cars (yet) but I plan to do my own work on my Bronco so I can learn more.
Would you care to give me a little more explination, etc?
Heh
Thanks

You might want to check the drag link. Its probally one of the most common places that could be worn to experience this problem. the pittman arm might also be the culprit along with the above mentioned items. Good luck. Let us know how it turns out.

Hey Dasmoof,

Do you have a friend or buddy that can give you a hand to look at the front end? I would like to explain it but if you are not sure what you are looking at it may be hard to decifer the problem. Try to find someone that might know about the parts at least and if not let us know and we will have to go through it step by step.
