I'm still thinking about gauges. I want to augment the factory gauges, so I picked up an inexpensive voltmeter and a 2-1/16" tachometer. I decided I wanted a clock, and it should also be a 2-1/16" gauge. I searched and found them from Autogauge and VDO. Sticker Shock! $55-65-70!
I'm trying to fix up my old work truck on a shoestring budget. Does anyone know of an inexpensive 2-1/16" quartz clock? Those digital stick-on jobs are really cheap, but I want a real analog clock.
I've about decided to put the three new gauges where the radio went. I have a "rifle shelf" somewhere in the basement, that may fit my F250. I figure an overhead shelf can hold any stereo in the middle of the shelf.
If you find an overhead console, let me know. I saw one a few years back at a Flea Market and wish I would have bought it because I hadn't been able to find one since then. I will probably end up building one myself.
For my gauges, I took out the plastic gauge covering (the black one) and cut the 2 center posts from it. Now I am going to get a plate (prob diamond aluminum) and cut holes in it for my new Autometer gauges. I will post photos when it is done.
That sounds cool. More of a project that I was hoping to do on my old work truck, but it's "doing it right." Take the proper space intended for gauges, dump the cheesy factory gauges, and make a new dash with good gauges. I approve.
have you seen the one in LMCtruck, it is a headliner replacement, it has a console for a stereo or CB, it also has four speakers molded in right behind the driver and passengers head, i think its pretty slick, dont remember the price off hand....but its worth checking out........
Yes, I have seen that one. I have seen it in other places as well, I think JC Whitney. I don't really care for it, it lokos kinda cheesy in the photo, but maybe in real life it would look good. I was looking for something more like a console centered in thecab between the driver and passenger seats. The one I saw at the flea market was made of wood and probably about 14-16 inches wide, and ran from the front to the back of the cab. It also had a cab light to replace the orginal because it covered the space where the original sits.
Actually, I sort of wanted make the clock one of the gauges -- so that's 2-1/16" diameter. I just found a 2-1/16" VDO clock for a Volvo on ebay. I put in a bid, but it will take a few days to close. It's standard 2-1/16" round, so it will fit any standard gauge hole.
my 77HiBoy had the idiot lites instead of oil pressure and ampmeter so i began looking for decent gages and i started thinking about a tach too... got pricey really quick not to mention how the arrangement was gonna look. yuck.
then i found instrument clusters on ebay and began playing that lil game to see what i could come up with. wound up with a cluster panel for the 80-86 trucks with all the gages i want and i got a factory (2005 Ford) radio / cd / cassette (with clock) and the old panel display is gonna go on eBay when it comes out being replaced with aluminum panel (powdercoat black) with inset cluster and radio with the original heater / lites / wiper controls arranged as they were. God i love them old trucks...
