I'm replacing mechanical pump with electric on my 87 6.9, I know there is no filter now but, since I'm changing to elec. should I put one on before the pump?
I'm not sure if the electric pump will be able to draw the fuel from the rear tank. Those electric pumps are designed to push the fuel more than pull it. Let us know how you make out with the installation/operation.
Well installation complete! .... now it won't start... I purged the system, checked volumn output and installed clear return hose from filter to closest injector. No air bubbles at all in hose. I replaced VC gaskets too and had to remove the pass. rear injector line to get cover off. So, I checked for fuel there after VC install and there is none. I left it cracked(took off) and cranked it over, nothing! I tried various attempts to get fuel through the line without burning starter out, still nothing. I rechecked all my work and checked the wires to the IP and everything looks fine. Anyone have any thoughts?
I have had an electric fuel pump on my truck for about 9 years now with no problems (although I did have to change it once). A long, long time ago I was having fuel problems (due to that friggin' water separator on the firewall) and at that time the diesel shop disconnected the mech fuel pump, put one on the frame dowm there, installed a Koalescer water separator, and sold me an upgraded electronic GP system. No probs with the mods. I had to replace the fuel pump about 4 years ago. If memory serves me right it was a 6psi lift pump. It came with a metal strp so you can attach it to the frame very easily by tapping a hole. I got it a the local autoparts store and it was like $25-$35...It may have even been a GM replacement. pretty common pump...works like a charm.

Where did you get the power from for the pump....... Did you remove the manual lift pump and put a Chebby Big block blockoff plate on. Check your FSS for power and clicking.........
well, with the electric FP, I just turn the key on and bleed through the schraeder valve on the stock fuel (secondary) filter. makes changing filters a breeze!
I pulled the plug off and on the IP and I can hear it click so I assume that it's working. And I have constant key on power to the pump. Even when cranking. I've been jumping the solenoid while cranking so I can see if anything happens
Yes, I removed the manuel pump and blocked it off.
I keep tring to bleed the injector lines by cracking the nut and cranking for about 15-20sec. tll I can hear it start to slow down the starter. I have a charger on it, and about every empty Beer I try it again.
Is there any other tricks I can try?
Well, I got the injector lines to bleed and I can hear the motor hit now but, still no start. Maybe I got other problems. It wasn't starting before and I thought this was the fix. I'm gonna try pull starting it monyana.

Fuel shutoff switch......it's what stops the engine when you turn the key off.
Master trim...I think batteries are below parr, if you can count the starter/engine rotations then the starter is not going fast enough to start the engine. You have a 5 speed can you get a buddy to tow start you around the block.
