I went to O'reilly's last night asking about prices and stuff for front wheel bearings on my 96 f150 4x4. It has self locking hubs with the shift lever for the 4x4. He said that that year didn't have wheel bearings. I researched my Haynes manual and cannot find a definate answer about the 96's.
So, would I have wheel bearings or not?
It's somewhat cold here and I do not care to remove all that stuff in the elements right now.
Yep, I called the place where I'm getting it alligned next week and they said it does have the bearings and grease seal. They want $100 to check and repack them. I think I'm gonna save the $100 bucks and try it myself. My neighbor has the special wrench for the nut the nut that holds the rotor on. The grease seal is some sort of two piece deal where it has the normal looking seal and some kind of rubber grommet looking thing. I didn't know if that was right so I'll try it. Is that right. Guess I'll find out tomorrow.
Be careful on your '96. The locknut tool is probably different, as ford used a different setup that year. You won't find the 4 prong tool to be of any use. You need a LARGE socket instead.
$100 to do the job is about right, but it's not hard at all to do yourself. Why are you worried about them?
I just bought the truck from a private dealer who couldn't tell me any history about it and I cannot get a hold of the owner who sold it to him but it was obviously taken care of cause it is a very clean truck. It is definately in need of an allignment because it pulls to the right.
Every part on it looks original (91K) and like nothing was replaced so I figure before I get it alligned I'd just check/replace the wheel bearings for piece of mind.
yeah definatley on the socket not 4 prong about 6 prong try napa auto parts for the socket it took me three store to finally find that socket, & it not really that hard to do did it to mine in the fall.
