I need advice!!!

First of all, I would like to say that I think this GREAT site!!!! About 1 week ago I bought an 05 250 psd automatic, and I LOVE it!! This is my first diesel and my first automatic. I pull a cargo trailer that weighs 3100 pounds with its contents about 99% of the time. Do I need to use the tow/haul button with this amount of weight? I was also wondering if I should make the transmission relearn while I was pulling the trailer since I am always hooked to it? Would this be a good idea or would it hurt anything???? Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hi thorseshoeing,

I wouldn't bother with T/H for general driving with only that little bit of weight behind for pulling on the flat and uphills. I do however use the T/H even when unloaded for downhill descents as I like the braking feature.

You can't make the transmission learn. It's going to learn the shifts of your particular truck every time you drive it. It doesn't matter if the trailer is connected or not.

As for Tow/Haul, try it both ways and drive the one you like better. It won't hurt it either way.

Don't obsess over it. The transmission is smart enough to take care of itself.

I do a fair amount of cross-country runs with a car hauler with my 04, and I generally leave it in the default mode unless I am climbing or descending a very steep grade. Otherwise, I've found that the transmission can handle whatever you throw at it just fine. You might get better fuel economy running it without T/H.

I don't know about your trailer, though, either. I'd say if it hunts then use T/H. How's that for seat-of-your-pants trucking?

I don't remember exactly where I found it - I think on one of the motorcycle forums I visit from time to time. They toss up some good stuff now and again.
