New 390 stroker buildup...

I am helping a local kid build up a 390 for his 3/4 ton 4x4. He wants a brute, so here is the plan:
446ci
4.25 crank
4.09 bore
6.7 BBC H-beam rods
9.5-10:1 compression
Stock Ebock heads
Harland Sharp rockers on HD shafts w/endstands
Performer RPM manifold
Truck avenger 770
CompCams 280s 282adv 236@.050 .571 110
Standard Oil pump w/ARP shaft
Stock rear sump pan

What do you guys think? He wants something that will have decent low end torque, but not run out of breath too soon.

Sounds good. According to the desktop dyno, it'll make 419hp @ 5000rpm, and 495ft-lbs @ 3500rpm. The torque curve is pretty much flat.

That's almost exactly what I was thinking. Somewhere around 500ft/lbs and 425HP. It should pull that truck around pretty well.

Also, good news. We just finalized a deal with Patrick to buy his Ebock heads, manifold, and a bunch of other stuff for the build. We will probably buy the bottom end components next week and get it all sent off to machining.

Cool! Let us know how it turns out!

I think this is the first time I've seen anyone on here use a solid lifter cam. Will you be blocking the oil passages to the lifters, or using shell type lifters?

Haven't got that far yet. We are still looking for a piston. By my calculations we need a 4.09 bore, 1.345 compression height, and a 20 to 26cc dish to be at 9.5-10:1.

By the way, will one of you guys check my math?

Yep, you want a 1.345" compression height piston for zero deck. According to Desktop Dyno's compression calculator, a 19cc dish would put you at exactly 10:1 compression, assuming a 72cc combustion chamber volume.

Diamond Racing offers a part number for a 4.09 piston, 1.33 compression height, 17cc dish, that may be just the ticket. It's not zero deck, but should work out to be 9.9:1 compression. I'll call them Monday to see what pricing is like.
