I think I may have cooked my (original) starter on my 1985 6.9 F250. I wasn't drawing any fuel (it must have froze somwhere in the lines as it's been cold as ***** in NY) and I think I may have over cranked because I am only getting a click from down on the starter (after I just charged te batteries). so I have 2 questions:
how do I test to make sure it is the starter?
what brand/ kind to buy as a replacement? Is there an upgraded one?
TIA,
Charlie
Hey there! Welcome..
You can take a hammer and hit the starter to try and free it up. I had to do that a couple of times before I replaced mine. While your down there check to see if the terminal on the starter is discolored, bent, burnt. If it is, it got too hot. Check the eyelet to, as I had to replace mine(it'll save you an extra trip to the store). Ultimatly if you have a battery/Alt. tester you can make sure your batteries ar OK then go from there. But, if you hear a clicking noise and you know the batteries are good it's most likely the starter. Starters are very sensitive to heat so, never over crank them by running them more then 15 second max. at a time. If your cranking alot you should allow some time to cool. So, you should relace with a high torque mini (easier to put in)starter I think AUTOZONE carries them and I heard they have a lifetime warrenty. I ordered one off E-bay $150 including shipping. Hope this helps!
replacement you want to get. They are $129.00 at auto Zone, lifetime warranty. Do you have AZ up there?
also, make sure your cables are good. Some of the cables deteriorate on the inside.
Dave
is mitsubishi gear reduction the same one dave200 mentions at autozone (we have 'em) for $129? or is that a different model? mine is the original and it says misubishi on it...

Dave,
thx for the info and we do have autozone. I called them and they want $185 for something made by "duralast import" I have no idea if this is the one you mention or some POS...???
This is what I come up with here in FL... Is this the right one? They list other ones that are gear reduction but they are more money.

Now, if you have original Ford starter, this one is physically smaller. Don't let that fool you. 'Tis a better starter.
