Hey im doing my first paintjob on a Ford Merkeur, and i was wondering if anyone could give me an estimate of how much sand paper discs ill need to get, and what kind (Grit)? I dont mind paying for it but i dont want to but $100 worth of paper and use $20. The vehicle is normal car size, and im just doing plain urethane with 2k primer. Any help would be appreciated. FTE ROCKS!!
This depends on the paper, I use 3M gold and the new stuff from Home Depot, both are high quality papers. I use a small wire brush to clean the paper so that I get more life from it.
You car is about the same size as a fullsize extend truck cab so I'd say 3 sheets of each grade, 120, 200, 400
this assumes no body work and that your just preping the paint for new paint. The final sanding (400 grit) should be done with water and a dash of dish soap. I usually stop at 400, take a good look when it's dry and check for scratches.
You can use a powersander like the square makita for most of the sanding or a dual action, but the final should be done with a foam rubber pad ($4 from paint store) and 400 grit wet/dry.
Don't forget the 400 is DIFFERENT paper than the others, it's wet/dry paper not regular paper.
You'll probably be best to buy a few extra sheets as they can tear.
I am going down to the bare metal, and i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on the amount to get the old paint off, and how much to use for the primer. Thanks.

When I strip to bare metal, I use 32 grit. In the past, I used a DA sander but have recently changed over to using a 7" disk on a grinder. The 7" disc disks make short work, of a miserable job. For a pickup, I would probably buy 10 disks of 32 grit.
