I recently put on new tires 29-10.50, and they just barely rub on tight corners with bumps. so ive decided to lift it. all i need is a couple of inches, so i looked and found skyjacker has 2" coils and add-a-leafs. Someone has told me that cois are a pain to put in? is this true. And if i want to go bigger than 2" i have to get a new driveshaft, does anyone know where i could get one, and also do i have to replace the front one, or is it just the back? My other question is, how difficult is it to put a 4.0 in a BII. does the tranny from the 2.9 bolt right up or do i have to get a new one. and does the computer need to be changed, and anything else anyone knows would be helpful. thanks.
I'm surprised your tires rub, I have 31's on mine and no rubbing at all even with bumps and at full turn. The 2" coils and add-a-leaf from skyjacker is great, but why not go bigger? You can go with 3" suspension without putting in a new driveshaft. Some people have found ways to lower the transfer case with a 4" lift and not need a new rear driveshaft, but I don't recommend this. You are most likely going to need a new driveshaft for the rear anyways, since they're not very strong (depending on the style you have). I had mine custom made by a guy, cost me $658 and only $45 of that was for labor, everthing else was the parts (It has a lifetime warranty too). Anyways, the front driveshaft is long enough you can put on a 4" lift for the front and the front d/s will be fine.
For your second question, I've heard it is a direct swap, just don't use the 2.9L's tranny because it will not handle the extra power. The tranny's in these aren't very strong at all. And if you were to put in a 4.0, you would need all the wiring from the donor vehicle including the computer.
Something you could do tho, is build up the 2.9L a little bit, there is a couple cams out there for it, and headers and everything, but you would end up spending a little bit of money. An upgrade that I would do either way, if you swap in the 4.0 or not, I would upgrade the radiator because the B2's are notorious for overheating and cracking heads. You can do a direct swap from a 4.0 Ranger or 91-94 Explorer with the radiators. Also install a flex-light fan to help out with the cooling.
for your suspension they have coil spacers,or front leveling springs,or just new coils
or you can get explorer springs and they can give you about 1.5 to 2inch lift
you can add lift blocks or leaf springs( explorer) work too. your going to need to aline the front end. on a suspension lift less than 3 inches
now if you get a 3in or high suspension you have drop brackets with lower the front end you might need a new rear driveshaft ( cv type ) on each side it looks like a tulip with a boot . the stock shaft might hold might not might need steering extensions also not all suspension lift systems bring along a pitman arm which is needed some times or else you will get steering bind problems.
as for your engine swap Q you need the wiring harness complete also the pcm(computer) might need the throttle cable since the one from the 2.9 might be to short
if you want ac get all the ac system components. the a4ld in the 4.0 is better than any other year the a4ld is a good strong transmission but it also depends on how you drive that determines the a4ld use or abuse. if you decide to swap get the whole thing engine with trans the 2.9 a4ld can bolt right in place the 4.0 but it won't be able to handle the extra torque it puts out , if you decide to go the other way and just get the engine you can use the 2.9 flywheel with the 4.0 you also need the 4.0 starter. do not use the 2.9 it will not work. if you need any more info let me know monty
Thanks for the help guys. the only reason im not going bigger on the lift is my budget kinda low, but as soon as i get everything done ill post some pictures for everyone to see. thanks again!!
That's the reason I was only wanting a 2" lift on mine, because it was cheap. But for x-mas my mom gave me $300 and then my birthday was Jan 7th so I knew I would get more money, so I got another $200 so I bought a 4" susp lift.. now I'm waiting on a warm day lol.
well i just put on the skyjacker lift, and it only raised it 1/2", the new spring was about 1/2" taller than the stock, but they said it raises it 1.5 to 2", so i think im going to call and complain!!
