I have a Ford F-250 1983...
Problem: It will run, but only after bieng jumped. If I shut it off it will not start back up again. I have replaced the following parts:
Battery
Alternator
Starter Solenoid
Fuse Linkages
I had starter tested...tested out fine. The charge light will not go out. Does anyone have a idea what is going on here? Any help will be MUCH appreciated.
I wonder how many problems or symptoms you have. If you fully charge the battery with a battery charger, will the truck start? If yes, then you must have the charging system problem only. If no, then you must also have a starting circuit problem too. I would fully charge the battery, and then see if it will start.
Im back I just bought another 82 it had been sitting
for 6 years I got it running in abought an hour any way I
had the same problem the charge light would not go out the
alternater was checked and it was good I bought a new voltage
regulater that fixed it the voltage regulater is located right above the battery 2 5/16 bolts hold it on it is squareand maby 2in thick
69 f100 lwb 360 3speed 9in with 3.25 gearset ford blue and white
82 f100 sb stepside 300l6 4speed over drive 9in red
You might want to hook up a voltage meter on that battery and first see if it is in fact charging. Then you can look into other problems. I suspect that if the alternator light is on that you have a bad diode in alternator or faulty regualtor. You could also have a wiring problem which they are famous for. Check the meter first and then let us know.
Just another quick check. I know you replaced the battery, but did you take off the cables and also clean where they connect to the block and the starter relay/etc. It may be starting fine on the jump because with another vehicle connected the battery has a good ground. I have seen this several times ansd it is an easy, five minutes check. Just take the cables off, hit the cable ends and their connect point on both the battery and truck with a wire brush.....worth a shot.
herkfe knowshis stuff i ran into this with a friends f-250 and it had a manual trans he was able to pop start it but it would not start using starter it turned out the ground cable on the block was extremely loose and corroded so that fixed his but i cant be sure about youres
I changed the voltage regulator, had the alternator tested out at the auto parts store..it tested great. Put in a new battery...stuck a charger on the old one and nothing....dead. It started right up. However, the charge light is still on. Anyone have any ideas??? I will take it to work tomorrow and see how she does.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-Jun-02 AT 02:40 AM (EST)]Put a volt meter across the battery terminals, engine running. are you getting 13-14 volts? Yes then your charging, no then try the "B" terminal of the alt. thats the one that leads to the battery.if 13-14 volts is there and 12v or less at the battery check the wiring. Also check the fusible links to the starter solenoid that supply power to the truck and voltage regulator. Get a wiring diagram it is your best friend when it comes to electrical problems. I'm guessing that it does have a new battery and started when first installed but after driving around for a day or two a no start and had to be jump started and the charge light is still on. That would indicate that the truck is running on the battery, However if its a new battery first time start and cranked slowly or no start then starter circuit problem.Might be best to get the charge system test for output and starting system checked for draw.If your having trouble finding the problem. Then aleast the circuit with the problem will be isolated. Higgy

This is correct. I have replaced every possible part in this post (On my second battery). It has to be a wiring problem. Will see what I can manage and post back later. Time to go do some homework.
This is Kevin's wife. He has been pretty busy, so he asked me to come and post for him. He fixed the problem!!! It was the wire that connects the alternator with the solenoid (I am pretty sure he said solenoid... ) Anywhoo...I want to say thanks to everyone who offered thier help. He would probably still be without your help.
