05 250 deisel. Build date Sept 04. Dont know what my trany date is. Two time now I have put my truck into 4 wheel drive at very low speeds (2-3 mph). It takes about 5 sec before it engages and then makes a huge "banging" noise. No problems going into 4x4 at higher speeds. Both times when this has happened. i was stuck and went from drive to reverse. I was completrely stopped before changing into 4x4 also. Any ideas what is causing this? I only have a 1000mi on the truck.
To be honest and im sure i will hear some stuff on this one but i had a hell of a time getting my 4 wheel drive INTO 4 wheel drive when i first got it. It didnt get into 4 wheel any easier until about 5k, Now thats just my truck and i only used it when i went to the dirt about once every 2 weeks and no serious off roading just did it to turn the gears keep things lubed up. My advice is to just keep trying it and it will get easier unless you really do have a problom. I did however hear clunks and load bangs for the first 2 thou or so. Good luck
Lock the hubs manually. Then at a stop, put it in four. Do you still get the clunk? If not, Then I'd think that you might have a problem with the vaccume control to the auto hubs. Or, since it's a bit chilly back east, maybe the grease in the hubs is a bit thick -holding things in place until there's enough force to get things to mesh up.
If you still get the clunk, then I'd figure there's an out of tollerance at the transfercase or the solenoid control.
What ever you do, don't switch from 2high to 4Low when moving.
