I am hoping that the wealth of knowledge on this site can give me some info.
I just dropped my truck off at a shop to have the front emergency brake cable replaced. I have had the other two done recently, but that shop couldn't get the front brake cable in, in time. The shop (where the truck is now) just informed me that I needed a new E-Brake Ratchet assembly. I have never heard of this part needing to be replaced, and a quick search of other threads on this board didn't reveal anything. Has this happened to anyone before?
The shop said that the self-adjusting part of the ratchet assembly wasn't working. And the part had to be ordered as a whole. So there would be the potential of the e-brake not releasing. Sounded strange, yet feasible, to me.
I don't believe there is any adjustment there, only by having the rear brakes adjusted correctly. Maybe they meant the pedal wasn't releasing properly.
The parking brake on my 94 has been sorta flaky since it was new. There is a TSB out there; the dealer installed a wedge on the parking brake ratchet assembly to improve engagement. Didn't fix it. They installed a new ratchet assembly; somewhat better but still not right. What happens is while pressing down on the brake, it sometimes slips over several teeth and finally engages with the pedal down low . This is the only issue on the parking brake that I'm aware of on the current generation of Ranger. Ken00 is correct, there is no adjustment on the ratchet assembly.
