I posted about this in the driveline forum with no response, so I'll try here...
Looks like I broke something in the front differential. The front driveshaft is turning, but not the axles. Is it more likely to be a spider gear or pinion? There was no noise (and is still no noise). Just stopped turning. Any ideas? I'm thinking it will be easier/better to replace the entire diff assembly with a used unit.
It's a '86 F250 4x4 with 6.9 auto. 8600 gvw, 4600 Front axle weight and 35 for axle code. Is this a spicer 50 with 4.10 gears?
I found a parts truck, but am not sure it's the correct front end. '81 F250 351 4spd, 8700 gvw, 3360 front axle weight and 41 for axle code.
Drop the inspection plate to see whats up. I had the ring and pinion shred in a blazer I had and just replaced the ring and pinion. Very easy and fast. The only thing you may have to do to the new ring and pinion is to shem it to keep it from singing while at speed. Start here for Info www.drivetrain.com
Thanks for the post. I would just drop the inspection plate, but it's a ifs and requires the removal of the axles before the differential unit comes loose to be inspected - big job and makes it immobile until repaired.
Does anyone know if the parts truck will have the same front diff and gears? How would I tell? There's no tag on the differential...
Your parts truck has A Dana 44, while yours has a 50 with 4.10's. I don't have axle code 41 in my books, but, I don't have an 81 one handy, but, the ratio probably isn't the same either.
Another 50 with 4.10's shouldn't be hard to find. They're more common after 86 than before however. Earlier, I'd look for a F350 instead of a F250, 80-85, all they got was the 50.
