'78 need OD options
I'm looking into OD options for my truck. Any suggestions and questions answered are appreciated. Here's the rig:
'78 F350 Camper Special 4x2
Custom built 460. Desktop Dyno sheet0: 404/472 hp/torque @ 4500 rpm. 406 torque @ 2000 rpm.
Stock C6.
Stock Dana 70 4:10 locker.
Stock wheel/tire sizes.
I've heard the AOD can be converted to mate to this block, but sounds like much work and money. Worth it?
Looking at the E40D I learned this is electronically controlled. What behavior is electronically controlled, and can this be modified to meet my old-iron application?
Also, I have seen tailshafts and third-member units that may work, but these are extremely costly. Are these worthy alternatives to an OD trans?
As you likely guessed, this is a towing rig. I'm looking to save wear and tear on the engine at cruise (3k rpm @ 60mph), and, of course, fuel economy.
Thanks for taking the time to read, your feedback is appreciated.
Cheers,
FSH
If you want to keep an auto trans and want something to last the gear venders IMO is the way to go. If you wanted to convert the truck to a 5-speed then I would install a ZF. If I find a good deal on a ZF 5-speed I will install it in my 78 bronco.
