Splashing oil

What would cause oil to make it to the top of the dipstick?

Hmmm...

Plugged PCV Valve .
Also check the oil filler cap for being plugged.

I have a vented oil filler cap due to an open air cleaner. Is this a mistake?

Oil filler cap is vented and not plugged, and the PCV valve in the other valve cover has vacuum. Anything I'm missing?

While the engine is running take the oil filler cap OFF and see how much air & smoke comes out of the hole.
The pressure in the crankcase has to go somewhere if everything that is supposed to be vented is plugged then out the dipstick hole it comes.

I get some air and smoke with the cap off. Is the vent enough to relieve the pressure? If not, where do i connect the PCV valve to with an open aircleaner?

thanks

I guess this doesn't help my rear main seal leak either?

Remove the oil filler cap.

Now,
Clean off the top of the dipstick tube and put the dipstick back in.

Now Rev the engine up for about 5 minutes and observe the top of the dipstick tube for leaks.

If it doesn't leak out > Clean the oil filler cap and/or replace it.

Check the PCV valve by shaking it to hear rattle.

Also, See the word EDIT beside the word reply on the bottom of the posts ? You have an hour from the time of the post to go back and EDIT your post. This feature helps keeps the post count down.

Splashing oil

if anyone is interested, my truck had a moderate rear main seal leak, and was blowing oil out of a small crack in the dipstick tube (took me a while to find that one). I replaced the dipstick tube with a new one but was still getting oil to the top of the dipstick. After reading a bunch of posts, I changed the PCV valve even though mine was working. I changed it with a Fram unit, and no more oil to the top of the dipstick, and my rear main seal leak is now very, very minor!
Thanks for the help. This sight has saved me tons of $$$.
