I am having a heater problem. I am getting plenty of hot air in the heater core box, and no sign of coolant leakage. I am getting a good flow of cold air from the blower. The temp control cable is OK, and seems to be working, but I am not getting the hot air to the windshield, feet, and dash outlets. The air conditioner works. By turning on the AC, and putting the temp control on hot, we do get heat. What is the problem, and will it hurt anything to get heat in this way (with the AC on?) Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.
I don't think it would hurt anything, except your wallet. In the engine compartment, on the right side of the box (looking in) that hold the heater core is a vacuum actuator. Disconnect the line going into it, and pull a vacuum on it to see if it's leaking.
Yes looking into your hood up at the top you will notice a round about 3" thing that looks like a mini fuel filter and has a vacum hose connecting to it and a plastic rod at the other end check that it is responsible for opening and closing the doors and the ducts to direct the air where you want it.
On older cars this was a manual function (a cable ran from the lever inside the vehicle to the one under the hood to operate the doors and ductways from inside the vehicle) nowadays the vacum of the engine is used to actuate a mini lever which is actually a plunger which is pulled in and out by the vacum that does this with no manual effort (except moving the switch of course) to open and close the doors and direct the air.

Thanks guys. I know where this vacuum can is. When you put the selector in the off position, you can see that the plunger is pulling down into the can. In the heat position, it does make some difference in the heat, (I think) when we pull/ push this plunger down by hand. There is vacuum there pulling it down, but only when we go to the OFF position. I'll check it our more.
You my need to check the valve in the dash. I have a 90 and the valve in the dash sticks from time to time and I have to pull the top of the dash off and put in some WD-40. The valve is on the right side of the dash, it is round and on my Aero it's black.
