My 95 F-150 5.0L has developed a serious problem. When I went to start the truck today at the local gas station, I turned the key and got nothing. I had power, just nostarter engagement whatsoever.
When the starter finally did engage, I heard a bunch of "clicking" while the starter was turning over the engine. The engine was very sluggish but finally took off. The battery is not low either. It's a new battery and the truck has been starting fine.
When I got home, I shut the truck off and attempted to restart it again. The starter made an awful grinding sound and the engine was slow to turn over again. There was also some more clicking to it, like a connection or something was loose somewhere and maybe something was arcing out.
This is the first day this has happened and I had no indication that anything was amiss. I am wondering what the problem could be. With the loud grinding sound, I'm wondering if maybe theflywheel isn't cracked or something along those lines. Has anyone else had this problem with their 95 Ford? Any and all input would be greatly appreciated.
Does it do it cold? If so you can narrow the problem down quite a bit. It sounds like it might be the starter, the battery, or the cables. Don't rule the battery out because it's new.
To inspect the flywheel, pull the starter off and have someone slowly crank the engine over with a breaker bar. You can look at the teeth as they go by.
I'd have to go with Andy on this one. Just make sure to check your engine to chassis (firewall) ground near your evaporator core to the passenger side of your engine. Will cause solenoid type clicking, sluggish starts and won't start when hot. Bench test your starter once pulled and confirm that it's not a defective battery.
The problem actually happened after the truck had been running for a bit. At first I thought it was a dead battery, but the weather here has been -24 degrees and that truck has cranked and started with absolutely no problem whatsoever. The guage also indicates good charging too.
It just really sounded like the flywheel might be cracked when it was turning over....
