I am repairing all of the rust on my '75 and soon it will be time to paint. I am considering adding some chrome to the exterior. It has Custom trim and looks pretty plain. It has the chrome around the windshield and drip mouldings and chrome behind the cab at the two tone line and that's it. Looks odd too with all the chrome up top and none on the sides or bottom.
Here's the question. Was it possible to order a truck in '75 with the Custom trim level and the bodyside moldings? What about the tailgate trim? I have a nice tailgate trim piece that I snagged from a junkyard for almost nothing. It's begging to go on the truck. And the chrome around the taillights looks good, too. And the trim around the wheel wells.....I wanted to keep the truck stock but I have an addiction to chrome.
So, does anybody have a Custom with tailgate trim or the bodyside molding with the vinyl insert? Have any ideas on which way to go? I want the truck to be "as it could have been" in '75 or as it could have been ordered (it was a special order truck). Or...should I leave it plain. What's your opinion?
Depends on the color of the truck. I went with mettalic silver for my 77 custom and decided to leave out the chrome completely. Everything went gloss black and it looks awesome. Plus it is a 4x4 and I won't have to worry about polishing much.
You can buy the chrome after market, but you will also have to purchase the clips that hold them on for an additional cost. My Dad did this with his 78 custom and it was tedious but worth the effort
I got a sales brochure from a local swapmeet for the 1979 F-Series trucks. It was only a couple of dollars and is a good referance for doing a restoration and such. As for the trim, I have some of the racetrack molding for a shortbed that's in pretty good shape. I have the beltline molding with the black rubber from the front to rear, and the continuation of it from the rear side marker lights, down around the rear wheel wells and to the lower front of the cab. You can get a visual for reference by looking at a two tone truck from that era. As for the lower molding continuing across the bottom of the cab and front fender, it's pretty hard to locate. I haven't found a place yet that produces it. I got mine from a gentleman in California who took it off to repaint the vehicle a solid color and decided to leave the trim off.
Yes, you could special order a Custom model pickup with all the chrome trim. I've seen a few of them, usually they have a 2-tone paint job. I just finished restoring my 73 F100 Custom. It is 2-tone brown and white. It originally had only the chrome down the middle separating the two colors and the chrome drip rail moldings. In restoring the truck, I added the chrome rocker panel moldings, wheel well moldings, rear belt line moldings, and tailgate moldings. It now has pretty much all of the chrome trim that was available in 73 and looks like a Ranger XLT, but it's still a Custom. It turned out very nice, and is still a very original looking 73 pickup.
I have a 77 f-100 and it has all the chrome tha you can imagen and is all original on the fender , on the front wineshed and back, on the tale gate arround the tale lights, on the doores, bumpers fron and back every where and it looks realy good. so I know tha if your truck doesn't hava to much chrome you can add it and is going to look good.
Thanks Guys. I think i'm gonna chrome it. I'll probably add the chrome bodyside moldings, taillight trim, tailgate upper and lower trim, I already have the chrome ford tailgate panel in the shop. I haven't decided on the lower bodyside trim yet. As I mentioned the truck already has the chrome windshield band, drip rails, and rear of cab molding. But i'm gonna replace the last two because they are oxidized. For some reason my truck did not have the chrome rear window molding but the windshield did.
