We bought this old F100 for a work truck and it's been running just fine. But, yersterday I went out to start it up and all that happened was a grinding noise from the starter solenoid. After I tried it about ten times, then nothing would happen not even grinding. So I replace the solenoid and still nothing happens when I turn the key. WHat should I try? Thanks!
Check your electrical connections and also check to see if the starter is bolted down tight. I had the same problem your having in my 81 F100, it was messing up because the bolt came loose and it wasn't making good contact with the fly wheel.
sounds like a low battery or a bad connection-cable at the battery. clean them good and check the starter for tight. if it still does it try giving it a boost.
Had the same problem last week. The solenoid made a fluttering sound when i turned the key. I tried jumping it off but still the same thing. Had the started tested at the auto parts store, it was ok. Replaced the solenoid switch. Same thing. Everyone said check your connections. Had 12 volts at the battery had 12 volts at the hot side of the solenoid. Just replaced the battery cables not long ago. So I was at the end of line. Just happened to notice the positive battery cable that i just replaced looked odd right where the cable goes into the clamp where it is crimped at the factory. I took it off and with little effort the clamp came off in my hand. I had one of those universal ends so I put it on after cutting the end off of the cable to get rid of the corroded wire and put it back together and guess what? She fired right off. So they were right check your connections good. Wiggle them all around, because I had voltage but not enough to spin the starter.
