Fuel gauge stopped working?

There is a little brass float attached to the sending unit in the tank that looks like it is a mini-keg 
. It is like $5 at the dealer parts counter. Usually the stupid thing fills up with fuel and just sinks. IE - gauge always says "E".
You can replace the whole sending unit if you feel the work to get to the float is not worth doing again anytime soon. Most will say pulling the bed is the faster way to get to it.
