i have 71 f250 camper special. i'm looking for an intake/carb (4bbl)/header system that works well together. i use the truck to pull my horses (about 3000 pounds) and sometimes to work when my wife doesnt complain about the gas bill............ anyway, i'm looking for a proven combo that can pull my trailer up most grades at a respectable speed. currently i can pull at 45 mph.(sorry i dont know the grade.) i have new 360 and a new "beefed-up" tranny. i'm only running 2bbl now with stock everything. switched to electronic ignition already.(pertronix) thank you in advance for all suggestions.
Dual exhaust, and the pertronix is about the limit with a stock 360. You can add 4 barrel and headers, but with nothing inside different you will only be wasting your money. IMHO
thanks for the reply john. thats not what i wanted to hear but thats why i asked here.
( i had a gut feeling i should have ordered the 390 instead) i dont know, i may try it anyway and send you a "you told me so" message later......... lol. thanks for the input. rob.
actually it does pretty good now, but i always wonder what if i try this.........
You can flip your air filter top lid over and give that baby some more air.
You should have put in a low end torque cam. but now, I would go to all that trouble now. That's alot of trailer anyway, That old work horse truck will be running alot longer if you don't push it so hard up them hills. my 2 cent

orich, These ol Fords can take it, I pull a 18ft. car hauler behind my 66, and run it 80 or better at times. I had a 88 F150 4X4 on the trailer and weighed the combo in at 10,520 lbs. I wont say it will handles it as good as my sons 04 F150, but I do think it pulls about as hard.
Oh, I know these old trucks can take it in yesterdays world when gas was cheaper and it was leaded. But in todays world most people don't think they need to run the high octane gas that was once needed because they have the harden seats. When they start using that truck like a real truck. when a truck was a truck ,not a car.. That was my point

Dual plane intake, 600 holley vacuum secondary, headers, 2.5" duals with free flowing mufflers. I have a stock cam in my 390 with this combo and it runs high 15's at the track. It pulls hard. But most of that would be the extra 390 stroke and torque.
I know just putting headers and duals on the old stock 352 really woke it up and added noticible torque.
thanks for the suggestions. i had the edelbrock intake/600cfm in mind with hedman headers. ($800 quote from summit, cheapest so far) i'll try flipping the air cleaner lid, i forgot about that one. my wife bought another horse and is planning to breed her mare soon so my beloved old ranch truck will really get a workout..... thanks again for the feedback. (four horse trailer $25,000. beat up old ford truck, priceless)
When or if you plan on getting headers. Check all the little foot notes.
Most headers you'll have to loosen or move the Header to (remove) your Starter. So put a new starter on if it's old and been on the truck a long time.
When putting on headers had have to be loosen in some way or you'll be saying those 4 letter words other than (Help) my 2 cents

Try the hotter spark with the Pertronix and duals first, that will give you most of what you will get for a lot less money. Then when your wife gets rich selling ponies, she'll let you rebuild the ol truck into a 390, and you can go big then.
My Dad's old '72 F-100 pulled a 20 ft Hale 5th wheel loaded with cattle for 8 years using the stock 360 - 2bbl setup. Some of the trips were long and the hill-climbs were slow but it got the job done. I rebuilt the truck last year (see my gallery for pics), stroked the 360 to 390 and added an Edelbrock 600 CFM carb and manifold and dual exhaust. The old girl runs like a champ. I can't help thinking how much easier my Dad's trips would have been with this setup. But either way, Fords get the job done.
