My 86 f150 has been getting worse lately. The truck likes to stall out on me. The idle will get slightly rough and then it quitely shuts off. Is this just a distributor cap? rotor? or the stator or whole distributor needing replaced? I got a trip to take it on Friday for four hours and I don't want it to shut off permanently. It has done it 5 times today and is the worst it's ever been. Thanks for the help.
sounds like the ignition module is going out. take it off and have it checked at the parts store. if you have another one or know someone that does, you can try changing it out and see if that helps.
I agree with Jim, but when it does shut down, does it start right back up or not? If it does not start right away can you check to see if it has spark or fuel?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-Jul-02 AT 10:03 PM (EST)]It always starts right back up like nothing is wrong. It usually does it when I put it in park.
I put a new cap and rotor since the old ones looked like crap. Didn't help though. I have a feeling its the ignition module too. You guys are talking about the module under the cap right. That you need the special "ignition" allen wrench to take off? And with the water line that blocks the screw to take it off? Which means I gotta pull the dist. out to get to the screw. Should the stator be replaced too? I just did this on my turbo coupe. And it had the same problems with stalling.
