I am converting my truck to 4wd. It is a 1985 f150. I belive the trany is a t-18. it is a 4 speed with a granny gear and the door code is A. I would like to know what transrer cases will bolt up to it. I relize sinse it currently just has a tailshaft that i will need to Probably change the output shaft.
t-case options for that year range (mid-80's) were the New Process 208 and Borg-Warner 13-45. I also think a B-W 13-56 may bolt up to your tranny. The shifter linkage is different for each model, so get that too with the donor case if possible.
Any transfer case from the mid 70's up to 96 ford 1/2 tons and up to 97 3/4-1 tons will work, as all the tailhousings/t-case's (execpt the divorced mounted np-205) all have the same inputs, but like justshootme said, be sure to grab the shifter as well. If you can try to find a NP-205 t-case as those are nearly built proof and is something a stock truck shouldn't break, but to use one of those you need a tranny crossmember (it has a drop in it so as to clear the d-shaft), and a bracket need to be made for the side mount on the t-case, also what ever t-case you get be sure to grab the adapter that mounts it to the tranny, as this will save you many headaches (assuming its a NV-435, which is easy to tell as they have tags, same with the t-case). Hers a picture of that additional bracket you would need to make (and what the crossmember looks like to, i will be putting 2 more bolts on the bottom of the frame for extra support too)
