Have the 96 that was having the radio cut out, voltage gauge go way high etc... and then basically back to normal.
I checked all the connections on the alternator and found no problems. Did find some minor corrosion on the battery terminals but cleaned all that and sanded for good connection and then sprayed sealer on them. Problem went away for a day(probably didn't actually go away... just random luck as it was).
Wife said its doing it more again. She noticed today that when it happened she tried to turn the dome light on and that did not work either. So radio and dome light for sure. Voltage goes to max. ABS light comes on. Then it all goes back to normal.
Still looking for ideas of where else to look or how to figure out whats going on and causing it.
Could it still be a bad alternator(its pretty new as a replacement-- IE 5000 miles or so). I'm just a dummy as a mechanic and suck at electrical problems worse but really need some more input folks.
Thanks tons. Just can't afford to take it to a dealer right now.
Sounds like you have an intermittent direct short that (for some reason) is not blowing the fuse. Check your owner manual and see if the radio and dome light are on the same fuse. That's where I would start.
Changed the alt because it had 175K miles on it. But its fine when things are normal. It charges etc.... Its just when the radio goes out(sometimes seconds sometimes minutes IE 5-10 minutes at a time) the voltage gauge goes to max.
Heres the latest update. It does it mostly when the vehicle is cold running into town(about 10 miles at average of 60 mph or about 10 minutes). After errands and on the return trip it usually won't do it.
Pull the radio and see if it does it. These radios are less than dependable once htey have some age on the. Some lose volume control, others lose the display. Mine loses display intermittently. Could be you are getting a voltage spike from a short in the radio. It would not surprise me. hck the buklb in the dome light to make certain it is not blown.
