Glow plugs question

Glow plugs question
My 99 PSD starts fine not waiting for the glow plug light on the dash to disappear.. does not seem to be any difference.. I guess my question is, starting the engine without waiting harmful to the engine in anyway ? Will the glow plugs last longer by not waiting for the light to disappear? Or is the whole system just for cold weather starts ?

I don't know of any serious repercussions in doing that, but the experts should be along shortly.
But, I don't think doing so will extend the life of the glowplugs any because they are on for up to 2 minutes anyway, even after the truck is running.
