Exclamation Changing a flywheel

Okay guys...I need a bit'o'help! I need to change the flywheel on my truck....without removing the engine. It's and '86 f150 with an c6 auto, I have a manual that kinda tells me what to do. But it says, "..can be done with the engine still in the truck, but not recommened." It goes from "remove the inspection plate"...to..."loosen the bolts on the flywheel" Okay correct me if I am wrong..but don't I need to back the tranny up a bit so i can get in there first?? If anyone has done this "procedure" before, or seen it done...PLEASE HELP!!! I would appreciate anything you guy could offer.

Get one of your transmission to bellhousing bolts out, then get some threaded rod with the same threads, about 18 inches long. You will need 2 of these, to go in the left and right side bolt holes. Remove the torque converter to flywheel bolts/nuts, then the bellhousing bolts, install the 2 threaded rods and slide the transmission back, with the help of a jack. The rods will keep everything in place. Remove & replace the flywheel and reverse procedure!
Good luck!!

Thanks man...I was just going to remove the tranny altogether...but your way sounds easier. But how do i back the tranny up without screwing up the pan and removing the tranny support? Also won't the weight of the tranny bend the rods...even if it's on jack stands?

You will have to have a transmission jack,(for support) and remove the crossmember. The transmission needs to stay on the jack when you roll it back.
Don't forget, the drive shaft comes out also!

okay...the tranny jack might be a problem...you see I'm not using a hoist for this...I'm doing it on the ground. I took off my starter in preperation for the work and it had fallen apart!! A boshe starter...almost brand new and it falls apart! The warranty better cover this.

I beleive the book is saying to take the torque converter bolts or nuts off.
I would ppull the trans it is real tough to get the flywheel bolts off without a impact.
Whats wrong with the flywheel if the starter fell apart maybe that could be your problem.

the starter I had before started to loosen and was hitting the flywheel while the engine was running...it left 3 dead spots abut 1 inch long each. The starter fell apart because the bolt holding the casting to the base snapped

You could get a transmission jack that can fit into a floor jack. this may mean having two floor jacks. I have one from Northern tool, but it is a little wobbly. Held my transfer case and M5OD fine. Just make sure you can secure the tranny to it somehow, mine has a chain.
