i recently replaced the brake pads on the front calipers of my 84 f 150 2wd. now they make a clacking noise unless i push the brake pedal. I noticed when i took the caliper keys out that there was a little shim/spring thing that went inbetween the caliper and key. I couldnt get it back in so i left it out. Is this my problem? i'd think that the calipers could be loose and this would cause the clacking noise. Please help.

 

That Spring Keeper HAS to be in there.

Yes it has to be there, its the anti rattle clip, which keeps tension on the pads.

 

I just put new calipers each with a new install kit (new retainers, clips, etc.) and mine still clack. They didn't at first but after about a month the clacking started up again at low speeds (I'll try trimming up the rotors one of these days). It's annoying but it doesn't hurt anything.
