Drving down highway at 65 and heard loud band and grinding noise, coasted to side of road to examine. I found no fluid anywhere and engine seemed to run ok, got in and tried to move. found that could get it to advance but very hard shifting from first to second. could not exceed 25/30 mph and engine was turning about 3000 rpm. was able to limp home about 15miles in this condition. At timms had very hard slips and shudders. Need help quick. BTW the vehichle has 213,000 miles.
HI Horse, you say you rebuilt yours? Did you do it yourself? Or have a shop do it? About how much was it to repair? Did they just fix your existing one or swap out with another unit? It is a 4x4, does that makes a difference as into what may have let go?
No, I had my tranny mech. do it, it cost $1800, but he had to replace a U joint and put helicoils in the case. I got a 12/12,000 warranty which came in handy, the new torque converter wouldn't lock, so he had to pull it and replace it. I am glad I didn't have to do that, ...I've done my share.
Yes, the 4 wheel version makes a diff. It could be something in your transfer case that let go. The chain, a gear, gear shaft bearing lots of nifty parts to break. Either way, they have to pull both and will check both for you. I highly recommend letting someone else do yours with that transfer case, it weighs a ton and is a bitch to balance and put back up.
Most mechanics can turn your vehicle around in 2-3 days depending on damage.
