I just bough a 1975 F250 4x4 and the front axle is nothing like I've seen before. It is original and from what I hear, it used to be very popular. It doesnt have ball joints that hold the "knuckle" in place, it uses a "pivoting knuckle" type setup. I hope someone can gather what I am talking about from my lousy description... I tried looking on the axle for a tag, but its to rusted and dirty.
If somone knows the formal name of this axle, I have more questions...
Is this axle decent? Pros and Cons
Maintenance practices for this particular axle?
Would it be best to replace with a newer Dana60?
any other comments would be great
You have a "closed knuckle" Dana 44, most likely with drum brakes. Most folks like to replace them with newer "high-pinion" open knuckle Dana 44 or Dana 60. I wheeled one of those for years, just make sure you drain the joints and service drum brakes and wheel bearings after a hard mudding. Very strong axle, I never broke mine.
I am used to wheeling a Dana60. I dont have the $$ right now to do an upgrade, so I wanted to know what I am up against. I will do more research on the axle.
