I have a friend that has a 99 PSD with what we think is a Diablo brand chip plugged into his ECM. His question is can he remove this and return his truck to stock or does he need a stock chip to plug back into the ECM. When pulling a load the check engine light comes on from too high of EGT. His thoughts are what good is it if he has to back out of the throttle. Stock might pull better if he can use more throttle. Also he thought maybe he would change to a programmer.
BTW, waiting like a kid at Christmas for my 05 SD CC PSD with every option except ESOTF. I'm a four wheelin guy and I like the lever. Ordered it on Oct 29 and it's arrival date is next week. Any help would be appreciated.....
The check engine light is coming on because of higher than stock boost pressures (the computer does not monitor exhaust gas temps). This is perfectly normal as a chip's primary function on a diesel is to increase boost. Pretty much all chips with good power will set the light unless the programmer has defeated the light (bad idea because a legit error won't set it off). There is no stock chip. The chip module plugs into the service port of the computer --- pull the module and the computer reverts to stock programming. If he puts a tuner on it the check engine light will probably come on as well under heavy throttle.
Thanks for the info. I'll let him know. So if it is higher boost pressure( we just thought it was EGT) will it hurt anything to pull long hills with the light on if he keeps an eye on everything else(eng. temp etc)?
I've told him about this sight, but I don't know if he's looked yet. I think it's great.
Yah, the egt's are probally really high, I don't know how much hp the chip is, but without a egt guage, god only knows how hot that thing is getting, if he doesn't like the chip, just disconnect the battery and pull the chip out.
