91 explorer Help

My Mom has a 91 explorer that we really need to get fixed, Its sitting down at the mechanics and they want to put a computer in it.
The problem first started when it would get hit, driving down the road and the coeck enging light would come on. Then it wouldnt start when it got hot. We put a starter on it, and a battery and it didnt help, It stopped while driving it and when you turned the key smoke come from the enging compartment. Towed it to the mechanics and they said it needed a coil, well it still wont start so now they think it needs a computer. Personally it sounds like what happed to my car and it ended up being the coil and ingnition modular.
I was wondering if you had any ideas because computers are pretty expensive and if its that i am going to have to find a used one on ebay. Im sorry its not described that well but its all just second hand info since i wasnt really there but any help is appreciated.

First basic question with a no start (starter cranking): Is it not starting due to a lack of spark? fuel pressure? both?

OK, no spark. Does it have fuel pressure? Fuel pump runs? Any codes in the computer? Some ignition faults will leave codes in the computer. Does it have power to the computer? Power to the ignition module?
