Hello..i have no clue about whats going on with my '01 Ranger XLT 4X4 4.0L 5spd. I live in a very cold climate and hardly ever use my 4 wheel drive except in the snow. This all started awhile ago when my wife and i were headed south on a weekend trip. at this time of course we were in 2wd and there was all of a sudden some sort of convulsion...similar to dropping the clutch. It only lasted a nanosecond and then all was well. I jsut wrote it off as bad gas or some other fluke. However, now that its winter and i use 4wd everyday practically, i shift into 4high and a few minutes later it will do that same convulsion. and it happens either every few minutes or once or twice after that until next next time i drive it. Can some one give me some ideas on whats happening here? i really appreciate it.
waht do you use the 4wd for? is it on the snow only? or is it on when your on dry pavement? i think A: your hubs might be bad or B: your ball joints. but im sure you'll get a more definite answer from some one on here
i use it mostly in the winter for hunting/fishing and yes mostly in the snow..thanks for your reply but i think i may a resolved this issue last night..i bought a new air filter and replaced it. It seems as though i have not replaced this filter in maybe 2 years..(yeah i know, shame on me!! for being so stupid) but i for some reason thought they were doing at the dealership where i have it serviced..anyhow, once i replaced the filter i drove it the rest of the way home in 4H and it never choked.. nor did it for the first 5 miles i drove it in 4H this morning..so i have to think that my system was just choking due to lack of air and due to the fact that the engine requires more air when in 4H, i have to think the problem would have been more prominent when in 4wd. If this sounds crazy please let me know..thanks
I guess i should change the title to choking and not clunking, but for some one that knows little or nothing about mechanics that is the best i could do.
