I have an '81 F-150 4x4 with the 300 six & NP 435 tranny. Are there any options for the stock carb that would still meet tailpipe emissions test? I'm looking for better throttle response and fuel economy. Thanks in Advance!!
There is a 2v alternative, but there is more to it than that. The carb in my 86 is a feedbck carb controlled by the EEC IV computer through a bunch of sensors and solenoids. The computer also runs the distributor, so to change to the non-feedback carb, I'd also have to have to change to duraspark ignition. Where I live, that means I wouldn't qualify for an exemption until I put everything back to original. In otherwords, pass the tailpipe, or spend unlimited funds until I do. If the vehicle is stock, then I have $150 ceiling. If I document the effort to get it to pass by showing a receipt from a certified emissions technician then I can qualify for an exemption and still license the vehicle.
Now, your 81 may be a lot simpler to deal with, I don't know. Tennesee may have different rules than Washington. My point is, study your truck and your regs before you go buy a carb. Consider posting your question to either the inline six forum or the fuel injection and carburetion forum. You'll probably get more (and more knowledgable) respoonse there. Also, check out the search function on the tool bar near the top of the page. You're sure to find some previous threads on this subject.
not to many options with the stock manifold the carter yf is about the only choice there problem is the throttle shaft gets sloppy and the carb is junk you can get a replacement for 120.00 at checker\kragens as yours is not a feed back carb in 81. But throttle response and milage is more involved than just a carb, gear ratio and tire size are critical factors on a six cylinder truck. I built a 4x4 short box with 3.08 gears and 33 inch tires it can get 18 on the hi-way but is gutless in town unless you start in granny. stock hieght tires give it more zip and just a little less milage
