It will crank, but not fire up. I did a spark test and did not see any while cranking. Where should I start? The vehicle ran fine since I bought it 3 months ago. It also seems like the battery (new) seems to be running down quickly..starter problem too?
Check for voltage at the coil when cranking. Then use an Ohm meter to check for an open in the coil (do this with wires disconnected - no power). If you do not own a muti-meter than you should not mess with it.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-Jul-02 AT 06:04 AM (EST)]I also plugged the wire from coil to spark tester, according to haynes manual test procedure...and got no spark, does this isolate problem to coil? Excuse my ignorance..
I'm not sure what you meant when you said "you plugged the coil wire to the spark tester". When you tested for coil voltage did you get 12 volts (while cranking)? You can pull the small wire off the starter soleniod so the engine doesn't actually crank then have someone hold the key in the start position. If you have 12 volts then the ignition switch and wiring to the coil is okay. Next easiest thing is to test the coil itself. Use an Ohm meter and take a reading across the two small wire terminals (you must remove all wires from coil to get correct reading) you should get from 0.3 to 1.0 Ohm, then measure from one of the small terminals to the high voltage connector (where coil wire attaches) you should get around 8000 to 11500 Ohms. If these tests pass then you coil is okay.
