Yeah right?

I think no more "ripping" for a while, just cruising.

I did sit on many many cruisers before my final decision and I just don't like them, not at all.

Not to mention that you CANNOT (in Florida) wear a helmet and show up anywhere without getting your butt kicked. Even leather jackets are frowned upon.

Most cruiser riders down here ride with shorts, flip flops, tank tops and no helmet. I won't ride like that anymore.

Here is an exact picture of the bike. At 140 horses (40 more than my Kawasaki) it's pretty comfortable.

I rode a "Fizzer" once. It is a nice bike. The engine was sewing-machine smooth. Great power plant.
They are very nice all-around bikes.
I'm a Honda guy - but I think you have made a good decision.

Tom, I have seen SOOOO many guys crash, get crashed, crashed others, etc. over the past two summers riding The Tail of the Dragon and surrounding North Carolina / Tennessee roads.

I ALWAYS were full face helmet, gloves (just bought new ones), boots and have a nice riding suit. The suit has the knee pucks, shoulder/back/elbow protection built in, but it ain't leather. (you can see it in my gallery)

I have been looking at a full leather suit. That will be my next major cash outlay for motorcycling. Leathers are not likely to save your life - they don't offer a lot of protection against blunt force trauma. BUT, they will save you from leaving several pounds of flesh on a strip of asphalt somewhere.

I raced WERA stuff back around 1988-2000. I crashed once on the track and my head smacked the asphalt HARD. I had on a good quality ARAI helmet. Absent that, my head would have busted. Of that, I have no doubt.
I saw guys crash at high speeds - nothing beats the proper gear.

IMHO - anybody who rides in shorts, flip-flops, etc, is displaying a lack of sense and lack of respect for what sliding down the road at 60 mph can do to bare skin. Hey, it's their choice. I can consider them stupid if I choose to - that is my choice.

Nobody ever plans to crash. I'll bet you didn't, did you? But...poop happens.

Best of luck in your recovery - ride safe.

Is this proper safety gear for riding a bike?

"Fizzer" is the nick-name sometimes used for the FZ. I think it might be a carry over from the FZR family.

Correct, Deal's Gap and The Tail of the Dragon speak of the same general area.
Check out www.tailofthedragon.com and/or www.killboy.com for more info.

Speaking of helmets, you should check out the new Scorpion helmets. I looked at them and tried one on at the International Motorcycle Show in Atlanta few weeks back. You can get a Kevlar/fiberglass helmet, with a great ratcheting face shield system that is easy on/off, plus very comfortable, for $189. It will be the next helmet I buy.

"Aways expect the unexpected" that is SO true. That is why I wear what I wear.

Glad your back, and that you will make a full recovery. I had a helmet save my life when I was about 11 yrs old riding a dirtbike. I will never ride without a full face helmet, not even down the driveway. That's a sweet bike, I hope you enjoy it, safely. I'm with you, the cruiser is not for me.

Thanks guys,

And yes, I will not even sit on it without my full face anymore. Funny thing is that I used to wear a full face all the time until I bought a Yamaha VStar for 6 months. I hated it, but it tought me to never wear a helmet. If I did, everyone would through stuff at me and yell behind my back that they were going to stab me with a knife.

Not a pleasant group at all. I want no part of the old fat Vietnam Vet group, sorry if some of you are from that era. But go to a couple Harley hang-outs and you'll catch my drift.

It REALLY chaps my back side to hear of such.
I actually find it hard to believe, but I don't guess you make it all up.

Some people are ignorant (don't know).
Some people are stupid (know and don't care).
Some people are buttholes (stupid and give grief to those who aren't).

And then there are those beyond buttholes.....

I sometimes wish I was as capable as Steven Segal, etc., with nothing but my bare hands.

You''d like to see one of those guys wearing a helmet shoved up his backside.

But, I am a Moderator, so I'll stop before I cross the line.

Well, I'm in Florida and have a concealed weapons permit so I carry all the time. If someone gives me too much grief, they'll take on a 9mm slug

I just laid down my ninja 600R this summer much like you did. Someone came across the double yellow on a turn and I had to take her off roading to keep from a head on collision. I put the bike back together and sold it...I want a 1000cc now.

I had the gear on though and walked away since I didn't hit a fixed object.

I've gone to cruise in's as well and the older guys will give you some flack about the gear. One said "Whats the matter, you afriad you're gonna fall?", I said, "not at all, just afriad I might not get back up." Some people just won't get it until they lay one down.

Glad to hear you are ok and jumping right back on.

Not entirely true about the helmets, as I ride all over Daytona Beach in full gear on my crotch rocket and never have had a problem. Then again, I've never stopped at any of the bars on Main Street to say 'Hi'
