I am looking for MPG for both the 6.0L and the V10 in regards to highway driving. I have read thru copius threads in regards to MPG, torque, HP, and smoke, smell, maintenance costs, electrical costs, modifications and pull factors. Most of the threads were informative, but not what I am looking for.
I use my truck for traveling while on long weekends and vacations. Usually between 15000 and 25000 miles a year. I currently own 7.3L, and I love it, have had no problems with the engine.
I am looking to upgrade to a F350 CC for space reasons.
I am debating b/w the V10 and the 6.0L, I was all 6.0 before I started reading all the threads on the V10.
However; I only use the truck for traveling far distances, 95% highway, and occassionally put a ATV in the back, or other items, never exceeding 1 Ton.
So the MPG I am looking for is just Highway running without pulling a trailer and with out motifications.
No mountain/elevation ratios.
My 6.0 that I just picked up two days ago got 16.8mpg across 100 miles city breakin and 275 miles highway breakin, i.e. no cruise control. I do not have any data past that, too new.
If you read the miles of threads / posts regarding 6.0 MPG then you discovered that virtually it seems that it is the luck of the draw. You should have seen HYWY ranges from 13.5 to 22+.
My '04 supercab long bed 4x4 gets 16.5 -17 from fuel up to fuel up (hywy) @ 78 MPH with cruise engaged, no load / tow. Of course that includes a little extra push from time to time when a Cummings or Duramax tries to show off.
As always...mods and driving habits have a HUGE impact on each individual's results.
Here's what I want to know if it's right or not.. Please..
I bought my 99 F-250 7.3 to pull my travel trailer.
Without the trailer I get around 15 mpg.
With the trailer I get 12.5..
Is this about right or what.
My trailer is a 22 ft. Layton and weight about 5500 lbs.
Thanks and I know some body knows.
The 3.73 and 4.11 are the rear end gear ratios . . . you'll pull a little better with 4.11s.
Back to the mpg, yeah I'd have to agree with everyone saying the 6.0 does get better gas mileage. However, will the little you save in gas make up for what you'll pay upfront? Many have heard me say it, if I'da had the money, I'd be in a 6.0 too. Since I got my V10 F350 a while back, I think I'd have to ponder it for a long time.
All I am looking for is a engine that is close to what I have in regards to relibility, power, and MPG, for the kind of driving I do.
Someday I am sure I will get involved in the calculations of torque, pulling ratios, and horsepower, when I retire and travel across this great nation at my leisure.
Another concern I have is this condition called "wet stacking", I am gonna have to be more aware of how long I keep my truck idle for, but anytime I sit in my truck while my wife runs in the store to pick something up, she says 10 minutes, usually 45 minutes, the idle does increase automatically without stepping on the pedal.
As a firm believer in the power of diesel, I drive from NJ/NY to Ok/TX, eight to ten times a year, and when you get on the highway and set the cruise of 80-85, the truck sails down the road effortlessly.
Thank God for the 70/75 MPH speed limits down south.
