Thinking about buying 2001 EXPD XLT

Greetings everyone. New Poster here.
I am considering buying a 2001 Expedition XLT with about 30K miles. I have some concerns.
Gas mileage is one, but of course that is a given.
My other concern is this tie rod issue I've heard about. My mechanic, whom I trust tremendously, told me to make sure to have the front end checked out really well, because there has been an issue of tie rods snapping. I saw one thread here where one person reported observing this happening twice.
Is this a big issue, or is this something that is rare? I really like the Expeditions, but the tie rod thing concerns me. Just trying to do my homework.

I currently own a '93 Bronco and a '97 F150 XCab. I really like both vehicles, although the engine blew in each one right around 110K miles.

I have an 02 and am very happy with it. I had the tie rods etc checked at 40,000 miles and they were fine. The gas mailage is only slightly worse than the explorer I used to have. A great veihcle, would reccomend highly if it fits your needs. This forum is great, these guys can answer most questions.
