Unhappy 4WD Problem...?

I have a 1996 Ford F150. I just bought the truck, and I tried to put it into 4 Low, and I cant get it to shift. Of course it has the manual **** on the floorboard. I have tried everything from locking my front wheels, putting it into neutral, park... It says push down and pull back, but its not going anywhere... 4 High works just fine. Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be? Thanks!

Transfer case could be bound up. I always try creeping just a couple inches and then I can usually get it to go right it. If it hasn't been used in awhile, it could be pretty sticky. Be sure to have the transmission in neutral and have your foot on the brake pedal.

IT definitely has not been used in a while. The previous owner had it for a little over a year and never put it into 4 low. What is the fix for this problem, and if it was taken to a shop, what would the estimate cost to fix it be?? I will def. try to creep and see if it goes before I end up taking it to the shop though. Thanks for the answer.

My dad had this problem with an 89, and the shifter mechanism was rusted from not moving that way. I didn't see what that exactly means, but the side push to put it in 4lo was rusted. He took it apart and cleaned it up, and now it is fine.

Mine was cruded up bad. I could not get it to push down so I could go into transfer neutral. In fussing with it the detent pin broke off so now I can get it into transfer neutral and 4L.
