I just bought a 1980 F-100 4.9L In-line 6 with a 3 speed transmission column shift. The owner before me took out the column shifter out and tried to put a floor mounted pin shifter in. I am buying a new transmission (T-18 four speed w/ granny gear) that is floor mounted and I know it will mount up right but have concerns about the driveshaft. What do I need to do this conversion? I am also worried about the clutch. It's a cable clutch, not hydraulic, will this cause problems? Thanks for any help.
I am thinking you need a hydrolic clutch set up, not really a big deal go to a local yard and pull the whole assembly, I don't think you can use the cable set-up with the T-18. Also, when pulling the clutch assembly grab the driveshaft. They are really common at the junk yards to find, a short bed is a little harder but still find them.
Thanks. Ok, so far I have clutch assembly and driveshaft. Anything else? I don't know much about the clutch assembly but, is it very hard to put in? anything special I need for that?
I'd check the awkard things to, like the speedometer cable, might be a little different. Also chek the actual transmission cross memeber and brackets that hold it. They aren't to bad to pull, if you gota pull one use a 1/2" breaker bar to loosen them at teh yard, mine where 18mm nuts and 11/16" on the top of the bolt. Used a box wrench to hold the head then a 18 mm with a strong universal at the socket, use a 6" extension. They don't come off to bad. Let me know how u make out.
1980F100: Are you sure you don't mean a linkage style clutch?? If it's got a cable clutch, someone has rigged it up... Anyway, the T18 will bolt up to the bellhousing no problem, and will work with your current clutch setup, you do NOT need the hyd. clutch setup. As for the driveshaft, I think you may have to have it shortened, and, you will have to change the slip yoke for the tranny. You shoudn't have to change the transmission crossmember, but, you may have to move it a bit, they have a bit of adjustment where they are tied to the frame, and, this where you will have to adjust it, but, I highly reccomend pulling the crossmember when you go to do this anyway. You WILL need a new speedometer cable, the 3.03 uses a real funky cable that won't work in any other tranny.
