Exclamation What's going on??

This morning (-8F) outside, we got loaded to go ice fishing. Truck is running fine(2002 Expy XLT with 47K miles)---We get about half way there(60 miles) and I notice I'm running at 3100 for RPM's(Norm is about 2100)----Pushed the OD button and nothing wouldn't go up or down. Then we stopped for bait and when I started the truck again it revved up to 2100 and stayed there---Wasn't a good thing to put into gear. I decided to disconnect the battery and see if things would reset. Well after reconnect it was just fine---no problems. Got back to speed and went to pass someone and then it would only run in 1st or 2nd gear and I had to move the shifter to 2nd to get it to shift. Pulled into a gas station and turned it off to try again. Nothing.....It wouldn't start--turned over but nothing. Then checked the fuel relay and that was fine. 10 minutes later after wondering, WTF!, I turned the key and it fired up. Has run perfect since then. The check engine light did come on 2 times during what happened and has now gone off since it restarted. I'm hoping someone may have an idea. The truck is still under a 90 warranty since I just bought it a few weeks ago. If you have any ideas as to what might have caused this, I'd like to hear them. We did have allot of snow(12") yesterday and I was driving through that quite a bit(With no problems)----Thanks much!-----Ray(In Wis.)

If the CEL came on AFTER you discionnected the battery, I'd try to get the codes read. If not, your guess is as good as mine. I would have said transmission problems, if it werent for the high idle and FTS.

Thanks much for the reply. I too thought transmission but with so many other things going on, I just don't know----All I can say is that I hope this doesn't happen whenever it snows or during the cold weather because I do use it in 4x4 on the lakes and while off road hunting-----Hope I can find out what happened!----Ray

Sounds like what happened to me awhile back. I had a bad module inside the transmission that wasn't allowing the trans to shift properly. Dealer repaired it under warranty and have had no problems since.

I don't recall having as high an RPM reading as you have, but my tach was acting very funny and giving false readings. Pushing my OD button on & off changed nothing, as the trans was stuck in 2nd or 3rd - mine would not go into OD at all. It was almost like the computer "knew" what speed I was going and what the RPM's should be, and was sending that info to the tach, even though the trans had a mind of its own. Hope this helps, even if a little...

Well --Here's an update----talked with Ford today and they told me it was more then likely "Weather Related" since it's running just fine now. He told me to bring it in right away if it does it again though. Hmmmmmmmmm, If I get stuck on the lake this next weekend when I'm 300 miles from home, I'm going to be one mad Expy owner!---Will keep you posted. Thanks again to all others who offered info!

Just as a side note, when I was having my transmission problems, it was early summer and it just started one morning out of the blue.
