Question Chip or tuner

I realize this topic has been beat to death on here but I have been looking at many past threads and I still am unsure what to do..
I got a 96 F 150 ext. cab 302 auto 355 gears, K/N filter and Magnaflow exhaust... I am looking at using the truck for towing a bit. So a little more power would be nice. I am now looking at a chip or a tuner. My question is can I do both or only one or the other the past threads did not really answer that clearly. If I can only get one what would get me the best towing results? Also what make of tuner or chip is better for what I need. I did notice one nice thing about a tuner is that I can adjust the shift firmness ( how hard is it to program though and can I screw up anything) and right now my shift is not real firm. The only other mod I am thinking of doing is maybe headers that institute the stock sensors and stuff. Should I get the headers first or go right to the tuner or chip. (would like to wait on headers if possible)
Any input appreciated......

Or anyone
After reading more threads I am leaning towards a tuner. I notice that you prefer the Predator tuner. It adjusts the fuel mix and timing also where as I believe superchips does not , did I miss anything else it does?. I am wondering if a not know much person like myself would be able to use the Predator without making things worse.. Also I am having trouble finding a Predator listed for my 96 f 150 302 auto do they make one for me?......

Thanks for the help

You can't use both a chip and tuner. You must use one or the other.

The Predator does not support applications prior to 1999. The Diablo chip, as well as SCT chip, will give more power gains, on average than a Superchips Microtuner.

Short tube headers will not impact the programming of the chip or tuner, so before or after, doesn't matter.

Will a chip also improve the shifting of my truck or do I need to get a tuner to do that?? I like the flexability of the tuner like reading codes and adj. shifting, but am really lookin to gain more power so my decision is now more difficult...LOL.. All that I have been reading the tuner is supposed to give about 25 hp and 28 ft pounds of torque. Do you have a good guess on how much a chip would help.. Thanks again

A chip does everything a tuner does, only you can't adjust it. Power 8-12% over stock.

No, provided your foot doesn't get heavier when you have more power!
