Oil buildup

I took my valve cover off and there is about half an inch of oil caked on everything. I took the head off and cleaned it really good but I know the rest of the engine probably looks the same. What can I run through there to clean everything and how?

Oil buildup

If you want to clean the engine, the only way would be to pull the oil pan, and then manually clean it out. If you put something with high detergent content in the engine, or sometimes even new motor oil, you run the risk of knocking all that stuff loose and it clogging up the oil pump pickup screen. It can also clog the drainback holes in the heads and cause alot of oil to stay under the valve cover. Get a feel for the condition of the engine and decide if it's worth the effort to clean it out, since all that build-up is a sign it wasn't taken very good care of and might need a rebuild anyway.
