Unhappy OBD2 code

I have a 1999 class A motorhome fleetwood flair with V10, added a K&N drop in filter after purchase about 4 years ago. started getting check engine light two weeks ago. purchased OBD2 code reader and found P1131 HO2 switches to lean code. cleaned filter and reset the code. took on road trip to test and the code came back. any help would be appreciated. local auto zone has no idea what the HO2 sensors are. thnks in advance skiglass.

I can't quite remember, but it seems like I was getting that code or P1132 on my Mustang last summer. If not it was something similar. After looking for any kind of leak (vacuum, exhaust, unmetered air entering the intake) it turned out to be an o2 sensor. HO2 sensor is just a heated o2 sensor. P1131 is a Lack Of Upstream HO2S Switch, in other words, the front bank 1 o2 sensor.

thnks keith for the reply. we took the motorhome in for a smog after resetting the codes and a 15 mile road trip and it passed with flying colors. the smog tech said noting showed on there test, but after leaving the test center the code came back. i had my father-inlaw check for broken hoses but found none. we look at the sensors in the air intake canister and found two sensors, one on the side and one in the back of the canister. are these the 02 sensors in question? the other question is could this be due to bad gas? i had him go fill up with gas and drive it to see if it will reset on it's. should kwon in a day or so. thnks again for any help. skiglass

The 02 sensors should be somewhere on the Y-pipe near where it connects to the exhaust manifolds. I am quite sure bank 1 will be the one on the passenger side, but don't hold me to that. Chances are it just took a dump. I have seen 02 sensors go 150,000 miles and I have seen some that were shot at 20,000. Does the vehicle have a catalytic converter? My guess, it just went bad. Other things can mask themselves as 02 sensor problems, but since you are getting just the one code, I am betting on it being the problem. I guess bad gas could play a role in fouling a sensor, but I doubt that is the case. Leaded fuel can wreak havoc on them, but I doubt you are running 110 octane leaded race fuel in there Autozone will have these sensors, although I would choose OEM sensors. Dealers can vary widely on the price though. The sensors for my Mustang were over 100 bucks each at a local dealer, but I got them from a dealer in Maryland for about $62 each. Rockauto should have OEM Motorcrafts available for a lower price as well. BTW, it might be a good idea to replace both forward sensors (one each side) .
