Rocker arms

I am trying to adjust my rocker arms. The manual says they should be at 23 ft lbs but this is still loose. Does anyone know what the gap between the rocker arm and spring is supposed to be? this is for a 1980 f-100 4.9L straight 6. Thanks

The correct adjustment procedure requires a tappet bleed down wrench. You rotate the engine to where the valves are closed (tappet on base of cam) tighten the rocker arm bolt to 17-23 ft lbs then slowly depress the tappet with the tool until all the oil is forced out. Hold the lifter down and measure the gap between the rocker arm tip and valve tip. A .060 inch longer or shorter pushrod is available to make adjustments.
